I. His First Flight
The young seagull called to fly
The young seagull was alone on his ledge. His two brothers and his sister had already flown away. When he wanted to fly, he could not do so. He was very much afraid of flying. Therefore, he failed to gather up the courage to fly. He was really very sad. His father and mother came near him. They called him to fly. They even rebuked him. They threatened that if he did not fly, he would die of hunger there. But he could not even move.
The young seagull can’t fly
That was twenty four hours ago. Since then no one had come near him. He had watched his parents, brothers and sister flying. His parents had been perfecting his brothers and sister how to dive for fish on their own. They called him to fly. But he could not.

Heat increases
The sun was rising in the sky. He felt the heat because he had not eaten since the previous nightfall.
Mother reaches near him with food
The seagull closed his eyes standing on one leg. He had the other leg hidden under his wing. He pretended to sleep. But his parents didn’t look at him. However, his mother was looking at him. He saw her tear at a piece of fish at her feet. He gave out a sound to get it. His mother replied in a sound and looked at him. His mother picked a piece of the fish. She flew across to him with it. He leaned out tapping the rock with his feet. His mother flew across trying to get nearer to him. The sight of food made him mad as he was very hungry. But he could not get at it.
Dives for food
The seagull waited a moment in surprise. He wondered why his mother did not come nearer. He was so mad with hunger that he dived at the fish. He fell outwards with a scream and downwards into space. His mother had swooped upwards. As he passed beneath her he heard the swish of her wings.
Flight begins
Then a great fear caught him. His heart stood still. He could hear nothing. But it only lasted a moment. The next moment he felt his wings spread outwards. He felt the wind rushed against his breast feathers. Then it rushed under his stomach, and against his wings. He was not falling headlong now. He was soaring slowly downwards and upwards. He was no longer afraid. He could fly on his own.
Joy of flight
The seagull gave out a joyous scream. He soared higher calling ‘ga, ga, ga’. His mother gave out ‘gaw-col-ah’. Then his father flew over him screaming. Then he saw his brothers and sister flying around him. They were roaring and diving.
The scene around
Then he completely forgot that he had not always been able to fly. He commended himself to dive and soar. He was near the sea now, flying straight over it. He saw a vast green sea beneath him. His parents and his brothers and sister had landed on this green surface of water ahead of him. They were calling him to do the same thing.
Lands on the surface of the water
He dropped his legs to stand on the green sea. But his legs sank into it. He cried with fear. He tried to rise again flapping his wings. But he was tired and weak with hunger. He could not rise. His feet sank into the green sea. His belly touched it. He sank no further. He was floating on it. Around him was his family, crying and praising him. They were offering him scraps of dog-fish.
He had made his first flight successfully.
II. The Black Aeroplane

The author says that he was flying an aeroplane at 1 o’clock at night. The moon was coming up in the east behind him. Stars were shining in the clear sky above him. He was flying his old Dakota aeroplane over France back to England. He was dreaming of his holiday. He was looking forward to being with his family at the breakfast table.
Call for Paris Control
He decided to call Paris Control. He then radioed to it. He told it that he was on his way back to England. Paris Control duly acknowl¬edged. It advised him to turn twelve degrees west.
Sees storm clouds
He duly turned to that direction. Everything was going well. Paris was about 150 kilometres behind him. Then he saw the storm clouds. They looked like black mountains in front of him. He knew he could not fly up and over them. He didn’t know for a moment what to do.
Great flying problems faced
He decided to go back to Paris. But he also wanted to get home. So he took the risk and flew into the storm. He could see nothing outside his aeroplane. Everything was black. The old aeroplane jumped and twisted in the air. He looked at the compass. It was gone. He tried to contact Paris Control. But he couldn’t contact it too. He was lost in the storm.
Another aeroplane in those clouds
Then in the black clouds he saw another aeroplane. It had no lights on its wings. He could see it flying next to him in the storm. He was glad to see another person. He was saying to follow him. The author thought he was trying to help him. So he followed him. He flew for half an hour. He had fuel only to last for five or ten minutes. He began to feel frightened. Then he started to go down.
Saved and lands jsafely
Suddenly he saw that he was on the runway. He looked for his friend in the black aeroplane. He wanted to thank him. But the sky was empty. He went into the Control Tower. He asked a woman where he was. She looked at him strangely and then she laughed. She told that there was no other aeroplane except his.

The author was wonderstruck to hear it. He wondered who had helped him to arrive there. He was without a compass or a radio. He did not have enough fuel also in his tanks. Who was the pilot on the strange black aeroplane flying in the storm without lights ?

युवा सीगल को उड़ने के लिए पुकारा जाना
युवा सीगल अपने कगार पर अकेला था। उसके दो भाई और एक बहन पहले ही उड़ चुके थे। जब वह उड़ना चाहता था वह उड़ नहीं सका। वह उड़ने से बहुत डरता था। इसलिए वह उड़ने के लिए उत्साह जुटाने में असमर्थ रहा। वह सचमुच काफी उदास था। उसका पिता और माता उसके पास आए। उन्होंने उसे उड़ने के लिए कहा। उन्होंने उसे डाँटा-फटकारा भी। उन्होंने उसे डराया कि यदि वह उड़ेगा नहीं तो वहाँ पर भूख से मर जायेगा। परन्तु वह हिल भी नहीं सका।
युवा सीगल की न उड़ने की अवस्था
ऐसा चौबीस घण्टे पहले था। उस समय से लेकर अब तक कोई उसके पास नहीं आया था। उसने अपने माता-पिता, भाइयों और बहन को उड़ते हुए देखा था। उसके माता-पिता उसके भाइयों और बहन को अपने आप मछली के लिए कैसे गोता लगाया जाता है सिखाने में पूर्ण कर रहे थे। उन्होंने उसे उड़ने के लिए कहा। परन्तु वह ऐसा नहीं कर सका।
गर्मी का बढ़ना
सूर्य आकाश में चढ़ रहा था। उसने गर्मी का अनुभव किया क्योंकि उसने पिछली रात के आरम्भ से कुछ नहीं खाया था।
माँ को खाने के साथ उसके समीप पहुँचना
सीगल ने एक टाँग पर खड़े होकर आँखें बन्द कर लीं। उसने दूसरी टांग को अपने पंख के नीचे छिपा लिया था। उसने सोने का बहाना किया। परन्तु उसके माता-पिता ने उसकी तरफ नहीं देखा। फिर भी उसकी माँ उसे देख रही थी। उसने उसे (माँ के) अपने पैर के नीचे मछली के एक टुकड़े को फाड़ते देखा। उसने उसे लेने के लिए आवाज निकाली। उसकी माँ ने आवाज में उत्तर दिया और उसकी तरफ देखा। उसकी माँ ने मछली का एक टुकड़ा उठाया। वह इसके साथ उसके पास उड़ी। वह चट्टान को अपने पैरों से पीटती हुआ झुका। उसकी माँ उस तक पहुँचने की कोशिश करते हुए उड़ी। खाने के दृश्य (दर्शन) ने उसे पागल-सा बना दिया क्योंकि वह बहुत भूखा था। परन्तु वह इसे प्राप्त नहीं कर सका।
खाने के लिए डुबकी लगाना
सीगल ने एक क्षण के लिए आश्चर्य में प्रतीक्षा की। उसे आश्चर्य था कि उसकी माँ उसके और अधिक समीप क्यों नहीं आई वह भूख से इतना बेहाल था कि उसने मछली पर गोता लगा दिया। चिल्लाहट से वह आगे और खाली स्थान में नीचे गिरा। उसकी माँ ने ऊपर की तरफ झपट्टा मारा। जैसे वह उसके नीचे से गुजरा उसने उसकी परों की सू-सू की आवाज सुनी।
उड़ान आरम्भ
फिर एक महान् भय ने उसे जकड़ लिया। उसका दिल रुक गया। वह कुछ नहीं सुन सका। परन्तु ऐसा एक ही क्षण के लिए हुआ। अगले क्षण उसने अपने परों को बाहर की तरफ फैलते देखा। उसने महसूस किया कि हवा उसकी छाती के परों के बराबर से गुजर रही थी। फिर यह उसके पेट के नीचे से और फिर उसके डैनों के विरुद्ध तेजी से गुजर रही थी। वह अब सिर के बल नहीं गिर रहा था। वह ऊपर-नीचे धीरेधीरे उड़ रहा था। उसे अब भय नहीं था। वह अपने आप उड़ सकता था।
उड़ान की खुशी
सीगल ने खुशी की आवाज निकाली। वह ‘गा-गा-गा’ चिल्लाते हुए ऊँचा उड़ गया। उसकी माँ ने ‘गा-कोल-आह’ की आवाज निकाली। फिर उसका पिता चिल्लाते उसके ऊपर से उड़ा। फिर उसने अपने भाइयों और बहन को उसकी तरफ उड़ते देखा। वे चिल्ला रहे थे और गोता लगा रहे थे।
चारों तरफ का वृश्य
फिर वह पूर्ण रूप से भूल गया था कि वह हमेशा उड़ने के योग्य नहीं था। उसने स्वयं की गोता लगाने और ऊपर उड़ने के लिए प्रशंसा की। अब वह इसके ठीक ऊपर उड़ता हुआ समुद्र के समीप था। उसने काफी महान हरे समुद्र को अपने नीचे देखा। उसके आगे उसके मातापिता, भाई-बहन पानी के इस हरे धरातल पर उतर चुके थे। वे उसे ऐसा ही करने के लिए कह रहे थे।
पानी के धरातल पर उतरना
उसने हरे समुद्र पर खड़ा होने के लिए अपनी टांगें गिरा दीं। परन्तु | इसमें उसकी टांगें डूब गईं। वह भय से चिल्लाया। अपने डैनों के हिलाते हुए फिर उसने ऊपर उठने की कोशिश की। परन्तु वह भूख से थका हुआ और कमजोर था। वह उठ नहीं सका। उसके पैर हरे समुद्र | में डूब गए। उसके पेट ने इसको छुआ। वह और आगे नहीं डूबा वह | इस पर तैर रहा था। उसके चारों तरफ चिल्लाता हुआ और उसके | प्रशंसा करता हुआ उसका परिवार था। वे उसे डॉग मछली के टुकड़े | रहे थे।
उसने सफलतापूर्वक अपनी पहली उड़ान भर ली थी।
II. The Black Aeroplane
लेखक का अपना डाकोटा विमान उड़ाना
लेखक कहता है कि वह रात को एक बजे विमान उड़ा रहा था। उसके पीछे पूर्व दिशा में चाँद निकल रहा था। उसके ऊपर साफ
आकाश में तारे चमक रहे थे। वह अपने पुराने राकोटा विमान को फ्रांस | के ऊपर होते हुए वापस इंग्लैण्ड उड़ाकर आ रहा था। वह अपनी छुट्टी के बारे में स्वप्न देख रहा था। वह अपने परिवार के साथ नाश्ते की मेज पर होने की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा था।
पैरिस कन्ट्रोल के साथ सम्पर्क
उसने पैरिस कन्ट्रोल के साथ सम्पर्क स्थापित करने का निर्णय लिया। तब उसने इसके साथ रेडियो सम्पर्क किया। उसने उसे बताया | कि वह वापस इंग्लैण्ड जा रहा था। पेरिस कन्ट्रोल ने उचित रूप में स्वीकारा। उसने उसे बारह डिग्री पश्चिम मुड़ने के लिए कहा।
तूफानी बादलों को देखना
वह ठीक उस दिशा में मुड़ गया। हरेक चीज़ ठीक बीत रही थी। उससे पेरिस लगभग 150 किलोमीटर पीछे था। फिर उसने तूफानी बादल देखे। वे उसके सामने काले पहाड़ों की तरह दिख रहे थे। वह जानता था कि वह उनके ऊपर से उड़ नहीं सकता था। उसने क्षणभर के लिए नहीं जाना कि क्या करे।
उड़ान की महान समस्याओं का सामना
उसने पेरिस वापस जाने का निर्णय लिया। परन्तु वह पर भी जाना चाहता था। इसलिए उसने खतरा ले लिया और तूफान में उड़ा। अपने विमान के बाहर वह कुछ नहीं देख सकता था। हरेक चीज़ काली थी। पुराना विमान कूद रहा था और हवा में इधर-उधर हिल रहा था। उसने दिशासूचक यन्त्र पर देखा। वह खराब हो चुका था। उसने पेरिस कन्ट्रोल के साथ सम्पर्क स्थापित करने की कोशिश की। परन्तु वह उसके साथ भी सम्पर्क स्थापित नहीं कर सका। वह तूफान में खो गया था।
उन बादलों में दूसरा विमान
फिर काले बादलों में उसने एक दूसरा विमान देखा। उसकी परों पर कोई रोशनियाँ नहीं थीं। वह इसे अपने आगे तूफान में उड़ते देख सकता | था। उसे दूसरे व्यक्ति को देख कर खुशी हुई। वह उसका पीछा करने के लिए कह रहा था। लेखक ने सोचा वह उसकी सहायता करने की कोशिश कर रहा था। इसलिए उसने उसका पीछा किया। वह आधे घण्टे के लिए उड़ा। उसके पास केवल पाँच या दस मिनट तक उड़ने के लिए ईधन था। उसे भय लगने लग गया। फिर वह नीचे आने लगा।
बचाया जाना और सुरक्षित उतरना
अचानक उसने देखा कि वह रनवे पर था। उसने काले विमान में अपने मित्र को ढूंढा। वह उसका धन्यवाद करना चाहता था। परन्तु आकाश खाली था। वह कन्ट्रोल टॉवर में गया। उसने एक महिला से पूछा कि वह कहाँ है वह उस पर आश्चर्य से देखने लगी और फिर वह हँसी। उसने बताया कि उसके विमान के सिवाय कोई और विमान नहीं था।
लेखक का महान आश्चर्य
यह सुनकर लेखक आश्चर्यचकित रह गया। उसे आश्चर्य था कि किसने उसकी वहाँ आने में सहायता की थी। वह बिना दिशासूचक यन्त्र या रेडियो के था। उसके टैंकों में अपर्याप्त ईंधन भी नहीं था। तूफान में बिना रोशनी के उड़ते हुए उस काले अद्भुत वायुयान में कौन पायलट था ?
