The Frog and the Nightingale Summary In English

Frog in Bingle Bog
Once upon a time a frog croaked in Bingle Bog every night. His voice was very loud and unpleasant. He croaked in a loud noise continuously throughout the night. So other crea¬tures living there hated it. Insults, brick-bats and complaints, too, could not make the frog stop his croaking. So they had no choice but to listen to him every night.

A Nightingale comes there and sings
One night in the cold moonlight, a nightingale came there. She perched on the sumac tree and began to sing melodiously. All the creatures in the Bog cheered and clapped her song. Ducks swam to listen to her. Toads, herons, teals and tiddlers also reached there to listen to her song. When she ended singing, they clapped because the song was really very sweet. They called her song ‘divine’. This made the nightingale sing till morning.

Frog meets her
Next night, the frog went to the nightingale and haughtily introduced himself as the owner of the tree. He also said that he had long been known for his splendid baritone. He also said that he wrote songs also for Bog Trumpet. The nightingale asked how the frog liked her song. He called it not bad but too long. He added that the technique of the song was fine. But it lacked a certain force.

Nightingale praises him
The nightingale felt flattered that such a great critic of art had discussed her art of singing. The frog, however, added that she needed some training. Without that (his proper training) she would merely remain a beginner. She called him Mozart (a great musician) in disguise and offered herself to be ‘trained’ by him.

Training starts
Fired by art and adulation the nightingale sang so sweetly that animals from miles flocked there. Soon she became famous. Animals from long distances came to listen to the nightingale’s magical sound. The frog cleverly charged the fee for admission and earned a lot from her song. His ‘training’ was to make the nightingale sing non-stop and to kill her without giving any clue.

Frog makes the nightingale sing more and more
The next morning it began to rain. The frog asked the nightingale to sing in the name of ‘training’. But she said that she could not sing in such a weather. However, the frog flattered her like a sly creature and she sang for six hours. At last her voice became hoarse and began shaking. At night, her throat revived. When she sang, many birds and animals crowded again to hear her sing.

Nightingale’s audience
Among the birds were many titled ones. Owl of Sandwich, Duck of Kent, Mallarad and Milady Trent, Martin Cardinal Mephisto and the Coot of Monte Cristo came to listen to her. Ladies wearing tiaras also came. They twittered in the interval. The frog was both happy and bitter.

Effect of continuous song on the nightingale
The frog continued ‘training’ the nightingale by asking to practise longer. Day after day, the nightingale grew more weak and pale due to exertion. This had a bad effect on her voice. The birds and animals did not find any sweetness in her song now. They stopped coming there to listen to her song.

Rebuke by the frog
The frog got angry and asked the nightingale to puff her lungs to follow the fashion of the stage. He also said that she still owed him sixty shillings. The nightingale puffed her lungs. Being terrified she tried to sing. But she burst her vein and died due to that.

How frog escapes the charge of killing the nightingale
The frog called her stupid and said that she was prone to influence and was herself respon¬sible for her own death. He told that he had tried to teach her. But she was a stupid creature. She was nervous and tense also. He also added that she should have known that the song must be one’s own like that of his. He was, again, the undisputed king of Bingle Bog. He ‘sang’ confidently in Bingle Bog.

बिंगल बोग में मेंढक
एक समय की बात है कि हर एक रात बिंगल दलदल में एक मेंढक टरता था। उसकी आवाज अत्यधिक ऊँची और अप्रिय थी। वह ऊँचे शोर में सारी रात लगातार टता रहता। इसलिए वहाँ रह रहे दूसरे जन्तु उससे घृणा करते थे। अपमान, रोड़े और शिकायतें भी मेंढक के टने को रोक नहीं सके। इसलिए उनके पास सिवाय हर रात उसे सुनने के कोई चारा नहीं था।

एक बुलबुल का वहाँ आना और गाना
शीतल चन्द्रमा की रोशनी वाली एक रात एक बुलबुल वहाँ आई। वह सुमके वृक्ष पर बैठी और उसने मधुरता से भरा गीत गाना आरम्भ किया। बोग में सभी जन्तुओं ने उसके गाने की जय-जयकार की और तालियाँ बजाई। बत्तखें उसे सुनने के लिये वहाँ तैरती हुई आईं। टोड, बगुले, टील (चैती) और छोटी मछलियाँ भी उसके गाने को सुनने के लिए वहाँ पहुँचे। जब उसने गाना समाप्त किया। तो उन्होंने तालियाँ बजाई क्योंकि गाना वास्तव में काफी मधुर था। उन्होंने उसके गाने को ” दैवी” कहा। इस कारण बुलबुल प्रात:काल तक गाती रही।

मेंढक का उससे मिलना
अगली रात मेंढक बुलबुल के पास गया और बड़े गर्व से उसने वृक्ष के मालिक के रूप में अपना परिचय दिया। उसने यह भी कहा कि वह लम्बे समय से अपनी शानदार बैरीटोन (मनुष्य जैसी मोटी आवाज) के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। उसने यह भी बताया कि वह बॉग ट्रम्पेट के लिए गाने भी लिखता है। बुलबुल ने मेंढक से पूछा कि मेरा गाना उसे कैसा लगा। उसने उत्तर दिया कि यह बुरा नहीं था। परन्तु काफी लम्बा था। उसने कहा कि गाने की कला अच्छी थी। परन्तु इसमें एक खास ताकत की कमी थी।

बुलबुल द्वारा उसकी प्रशंसा
बुलबुल ने सन्तोष महसूस किया कि कला के इतने बड़े आलोचक ने उसकी गाने की कला पर विचार विमर्श किया। मेंढक ने फिर भी कहा कि उसे कुछ प्रशिक्षण की आवश्यकता थी। उसके (उचित प्रशिक्षण) बिना वह सिर्फ नौसिखिया ही रहेगी। उसने उसे छद्मवेश में मोजार्ट (एक महान संगीतकार) कहा और वह उससे प्रशिक्षण लेने के लिए तैयार हो गई।

प्रशिक्षण आरम्भ होता है।
कला और प्रशंसा से उत्साहित बुलबुल ने इतनी मधुरता से गाया कि मीलों से सारे जानवर वहाँ आ गये। शीघ्र ही वह प्रसिद्ध हो गई। बुलबुल का जादू जैसी आवाज भरा गाना सुनने के लिए जानवर काफी दूर से आए। मेंढक ने चालाकी से प्रवेश पर फीस लगा दी और उसके गाने से काफी धन कमाया। उसका ‘प्रशिक्षण’ बुलबुल से लगातार गाना गाए जाने के और उसे बिना किसी संकेत के मारने के लिए था।

मेंढक का बुलबुल को ज्यादा गाने पर मजबूर करना
अगली सुबह वर्षा होने लगी। मेंढक ने ‘प्रशिक्षण’ के नाम पर बुलबुल से गाने को कहा। परन्तु उसने कहा कि ऐसे मौसम में वह गा नहीं सकती। फिर भी मेंढक ने उसे एक चालाक प्राणी की तरह फुसलाया और उसने छः घण्टे तक गाया। अन्त में उसकी आवाज रूखी हो गई और काँपने लगी। रात को उसका गला ठीक हो गया। जब उसने गाया तो बहुत से पक्षी और जानवर फिर उसके गाने को सुनने के लिए आ गये।

बुलबुल के श्रोतागण
पक्षियों में काफी उपाधि-युक्त थे। सैण्डविच का आउल, कैन्ट का ड्क, मल्लार्ड और मिलेडी ट्रैन्ट, मार्टिन कार्डिनल मैफिस्टो और मौंटे क्रिस्टो के जलमुर्ग उसे सुनने के लिए आए। चोटियाँ (जूडे), मुकुट पहने महिलाएँ भी आईं। वे मध्यान्तर में चहचहाती रहीं। मेंढक खुश और नाराज भी था।

बुलबुल पर लगातार गाने का प्रभाव
मेंढक ने बुलबुल को लम्बे समय तक अभ्यास करने का ‘प्रशिक्षण’ जारी रखा। दिनोंदिन बुलबुल थकान से अधिक कमजोर और पीली पड़ती गई। इसके कारण उसकी आवाज पर बुरा प्रभाव पड़ गया। अब पक्षियों और जानवरों ने उसके गाने में मधुरता नहीं पाई। उन्होंने, उसका गाना सुनने के लिए वहाँ आना बन्द कर दिया।

मेंढक की फटकार
मेंढक क्रोधित हो गया और उसने बुलबुल को मंच के फैशन के अनुसार अपने फेफड़ों को फुलाने को कहा। उसने यह भी कहा कि उसे उसके अभी साठ शिलिंग देने हैं। बुलबुल ने अपने फेफड़ों में हवा भरी। डरते हुए उसने गाने की कोशिश की। परन्तु उसकी नस फट गई और उसके कारण वह मर गई।

बुलबुल की हत्या के आरोप से मेंढक का बचना
मेंढक ने उसे मूर्ख कहा और यह भी कहा कि वह शीघ्र प्रभाव में आ जाती थी और अपनी मृत्यु के लिए स्वयं जिम्मेवार थी। उसने बताया कि उसने उसे पढ़ाने की कोशिश की थी। परन्तु वह मूर्ख प्राणी थी। वह घबरा जाती थी और तनावग्रस्त भी हो जाती थी। उसने यह भी कहा कि उसे जानना चाहिए था कि गाना अपना ही होना चाहिए जैसा कि उस (मेंढ़क) का। वह दोबारा बिंगल बोग का निर्विघ्न सम्राट बन गया। वह बिंगल बोग में विश्वास के साथ ‘गाता’ रहा।
