Author’s decision to keep a pet otter
The author went to southern Iraq early in the new year of 1956. He decided that he would keep a pet otter instead of a dog. His place of living Camusfearfia had much water around it. So it would be suitable for it.
The author and his friend in Basra
The author’s friend heard it. He suggested him to take one otter from the Tigris marshes. There the otters were in plenty. He and his friend were going to Basra to collect one. His friend’s mail had reached the Consulate- General. But his mail had not.

An otter given to him by the Arabs
The author cabled the message to England. There was a delay of a few days due to fault in the line or holidays. At last the mail arrived. He went to his room to read it. There he saw two Arabs with the otter. They said it was for him.

Strangeness of the otter
With that otter, the author says, his life underwent a change. This phase of his life still continues. The creature given to him looked like a small dragon. The otter had pointed scales of mud armour on his back. Between tips there was a soft velvet fur. He was like that of a chocolate-brown mole. There was a lot of dust and mud on him. He took months to shed his mud over his body.
Otter identified and domesticated
The author called the otter Mijbil. His race was unknown to science. Zoologists gave him the name Lutrogale perspicillata maxwelli or Maxwell’s otter. At first Mijbil was aloof. He chose to sleep on the floor. The next night he came to the author’s bed. He slept in his knees. In the day he took a keen interest in his surroundings. The author made him a body- belt. He took him to the bathroom. The otter was wild with joy in the under water of the bathtub.

Two days later, Mijbil escaped from the author’s bedroom. He went to the bathroom. He entered thejbathtub. He turned the tap. There flowed full tap water. Later he showed anger when the tap did not open.

Soon Mij followed the author when he called his name. He spent hours moving a rubber ball round the room. He would throw it also like a soccer player. The real play of an otter is when he lies on his back. He plays with small objects between his paws. His favourite toys were marbles.

Preparing to take Mij back home
Days passed peacefully at Basra. The author feared to transport Mij to England and to Camusfeama. The British airline would not fly animals. So he booked a flight to Paris on another airline and another to London. Mij was put into a box to be habitual to it.
The otter and his box
It was flight time. The author returned from his meal. He found complete silence from the box. Blood had trickled from the airholes of the box and dried. He at once opened the box. Mij lay tired and blood-covered. He had tom the inner lining of the box. It was just ten minutes to the flight. The airport was five miles distant. The author put Mij back into the box.
The author in the aeroplane
The author sat in the car holding the box. The driver sped through the streets of Basra like a bullet. The aircraft was waiting to take off. The author rushed in. He covered the place near his seat with newspapers. He gave a parcel of fish to the airhostess for the otter. He told her of the last event of the otter. She suggested him to keep Mij on his knee.
Mij out of the box
Soon Mij was out of the box. He disappeared very soon. There were cries and shrieks inside the aeroplane. A woman stood and called “A rat! A rat!” The author saw Mij’s tail beneath the legs of an Indian. The author’s face got covered in curry. The airhostess assured the author that she would find the animal. The author returned to his seat. Very soon Mij came to him on his own.

Playing by Mij with ping-pong balls
Mij and the author remained in London for nearly a month. He would play with toys, ping- pong balls, marbles, rubber fruit etc. He played with a suitcase with the ping-pong ball. He would catch ball off the suitcase cover. He would hide from it and walk off it. This would become his favourite game.
Mij’s playing in the outings
The author exercised Mij on a lead outside. Mij developed certain habits on those walks in the London streets. He went with him like children playing, running and touching things in the streets. He would take the author near the primary school outer wall. He would then gallop on it. This interested the pupils and the staff to distraction.
Queries about Mij
Mij’s presence made the Londoners guess about his kind. Otters belong to small group of animals called Mustellines. These are shared by the badger, mongoose, weasel, stoat, mink and others. The author received several questions. It could be ‘a baby seal’, ‘a walrus’, ‘a hippo’, ‘a beaver’, ‘a bear cub’, ‘a leopard’. But Mij was nothing but an otter.
Question by a labourer
The author awarded the highest score to a question from a labourer. He was digging a hole in the street. He saw the author with the otter. He laid down his tool. He came near him and glared. He then growled out, “Here, Mister—what is that supposed to be ?”

लेखक 1956 के नये वर्ष के आरम्भ में दक्षिणी ईराक गया। उसने निर्णय लिया कि वह कुत्ते की बजाय पालतू ऊदबिलाव रखेगा। उसके रहने के स्थान कैमस्फर्ना के चारों तरफ काफी पानी था। इसलिए यह उसके लिए ठीक होगा।
बसरा में लेखक और उसका मित्र
लेखक के मित्र ने यह सुना। उसने उसे टिगरिस की दलदलों से एक ऊदबिलाव को लेने के लिए सुझाव दिया। वहाँ काफी ऊदबिलाव थे। वह और उसका मित्र एक ऊदबिलाव को लेने के लिए बसरा जा रहे थे। उसके मित्र की डाक कन्सुलेट-जनरल में पहुँच गई थी। परन्तु उसकी डाक अभी नहीं पहुंची थी।
अरबों द्वारा उसे एक ऊदबिलाव दिया जाना
लेखक ने वायरलैस द्वारा एक सन्देश इंग्लैंड भेजा। लाईन में कमी या छुट्टियों के कारण कुछ दिनों की देरी हो गई थी। आखिरकार डाक पहुँच गई। वह इसे पढ़ने के लिए अपने कमरे में चला गया। वहाँ उसने दो अरबों को एक ऊदबिलाव के साथ देखा। उन्होंने उसे कहा कि वह उसके लिए है।

ऊदबिलाव का अनूठापन
लेखक कहता है कि उस ऊदबिलाव के साथ उसके जीवन में एक बदलाव आ गया। उसके जीवन का यह पहलू अब भी जारी है। उसे दिया गया जानवर एक छोटे परदार साँप की तरह दिखाई देता था। ऊदबिलाव की कमर पर मिट्टी के रंग जैसी ढाल की तेज परतें थीं। किनारों के बीच एक नर्म मखमल जैसी फर थी। वह चॉकलेट जैसे भूरे छबूंदर की तरह था। उसके शरीर पर काफी धूल और मिट्टी थी। उसे उसके शरीर से मिट्टी उतारने में महीनों लग गए।
ऊदबिलाव की पहचान और पालतूपन
लेखक ने ऊदबिलाव का नाम मिजबिल रख दिया। उसकी प्रजाति के बारे में विज्ञान को कुछ मालूम नहीं था। जीव वैज्ञानिकों ने उसे Lutrogale perspicillatg mgruelli या मैक्सवैल का ऊदबिलाव नाम दे दिया था। पहले पहल मिजबिल अकेला था। उसने फर्श पर सोना चुना। अगली रात वह लेखक के बिस्तर पर आ गया। वह उसके घुटनों में सोया। दिन में उसने अपने चारों तरफ काफी आनन्द लेना आरम्भ कर दिया। लेखक ने उसके शरीर की बैल्ट बनाई। वह उसे बाथरूम में ले गया। बाथटब के पानी के नीचे जाकर ऊदबिलाव खुशी से लगभग पागल हो गया।
बाथटब में ऊदबिलाव
दो दिन पश्चात् मिजबिल लेखक के बैडरूम से खिसक गया। वह बाथरूम में चला गया। वह बाथटब में घुस गया। उसने नलका खोला। नलके में पूरा पानी आ गया। बाद में जब नलको नहीं खुला तो उसने गुस्सा दिखाया।
मिज पूर्णरूप से खुश
शीघ्र ही मिज लेखक का पीछा करने लग गया जब वह उसका नाम पुकारता था। वह कमरे में रबर की गेंद को घंटों घुमाता रहता। वह इसे फुटबाल खिलाड़ी की तरह से भी फेंकता। एक ऊदबिलाव का वास्तविक खेल तब होता है जब वह अपनी कमर के बल लेटता है। वह अपने पंजों में छोटी-छोटी चीजों को लेकर खेलता है। उसके प्रिय खिलौने गोलियाँ थीं।

मिज को वापस घर ले जाने की तैयारी
बसरा में दिन शान्ति से गुजरे। लेखक मिज को इंग्लैण्ड और कैमस्फन तक ले जाने से डरता था। ब्रिटेन की एयरलाईन जानवरों | को नहीं ले जाती थी। इसलिए उसने दूसरी एयरलाईन से पेरिस तक की उड़ान और दूसरी लन्दन तक की उड़ान की बुकिंग करा ली। मिज को एक बक्से में रख दिया गया ताकि वह इसका आदी हो जाए।
ऊदबिलाव और उसका बक्सा
उड़ान का समय हो गया था। लेखक अपने खाने के पश्चात् लौटा। उसने बक्से से पूर्ण शान्ति पाई। बक्से के हवा के छिद्रों से खून बून्द बून्द बाहर आया था और सूख गया था। उसने तुरन्त बक्से को खोला। मिज थका और खून से सना पड़ा था। उसने बक्से की अन्दरूनी लाईनिंग फाड़ डाली थी। उड़ान में सिर्फ दस मिनट थे। हवाई अड्डा पाँच मील दूर था। लेखक ने मिज को वापस बक्से में डाला।
हवाई जहाज में लेखक
बक्से को पकड़कर लेखक कार में बैठ गया। बसरा की गलियों में ड्राईवर ने गाड़ी को गोली की तरह चलाया। हवाई जहाज उड़ान | भरने की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा था। लेखक तेजी से अन्दर घुसा। उसने अपनी सीट के समीप स्थान को समाचार पत्रों से ढक दिया। ऊदबिलाव के खाने के लिए उसने एयर होस्टेस को मछलियों का एक पार्सल दिया। उसने उसे ऊदबिलाव की आखिरी घटना के बारे में बताया। उसने उसे मिज को अपने घुटनों में रखने का सुझाव | दिया। |
मिज़ बक्से से बाहर
शीघ्र ही मिज बक्से के बाहर आ गया। वह शीघ्र ही अदृश्य हो गया। हवाई जहाज के अन्दर चिल्लाहटें थीं। एक महिला खड़ी हो गई और चिल्लाई, “एक चूहा ! एक चूहा !” लेखक ने मिज की पूँछ को एक भारतीय की टांगों के बीच देखा। लेखक का चेहरा कढ़ी से ढक गया। एयर होस्टेस ने लेखक को विश्वास दिलाया कि वह जानवर को ढूंढ़ लेगी। लेखक अपनी सीट पर लौट आया। शीघ्र | ही मिज स्वयं उसके पास आ गया।

पिंग-पोंग खेल की गेन्दों से मिज द्वारा खेलना
मिज और लेखक लन्दन में लगभग एक महीना रहे। वह खिलौने, पिंग पोंग की गेन्दों, गोलियों और रबर के बने फूलों आदि से खेलता। वह पिंग पोंग गेन्द से एक सूटकेस के साथ खेलता। वह सूटकेस के ढक्कन से गेन्द को पकड़ता। वह इससे छिपता और दूर भाग जाता था। यह उसका प्रिय खेल बन जाता।
मिज को बाहर खेलना
लेखक उसे रस्सी से बाहर घुमाने ले जाता। लन्दन की गलियों में उन सैरों में मिज ने कुछ खास आदतें विकसित कर ली थीं। वह उसके साथ बच्चों की तरह खेलते, दौड़ते और गलियों में चीजों को छूते हुए जाता। वह लेखक को प्राईमरी स्कूल की बाहरी दीवार के समीप ले जाता। फिर वह उस पर दौड़ता। इसमें बच्चे व स्टाफ आनन्द लेते और उनका ध्यान बँट जाता।
मिज के बारे में पूछताछ
मिज की उपस्थिति से लन्दनवासी उसकी प्रकार (नस्ल) के बारे में अनुमान लगाने लग गए। ऊदबिलाव मस्टलीन कहलाए जाने वाले जानवरों के छोटे समूह से सम्बन्धित हैं। ये बिज्जू, नेवला, कथियान्याल, स्टोट, विस्त्रक और दूसरे जानवरों द्वारा बाँटे जाते हैं। लेखक के पास कई प्रश्न आए। यह एक ‘शिशु सील’, ‘एक वालरस’, ‘एक दरियाई घोड़ा’, ‘एक ऊदबिलाव’, ‘एक शिशु भालू’, ‘एक तेन्दुआ’ हो सकता था। परन्तु मिज एक ऊदबिलाव के सिवाय कुछ नहीं था।
एक मजदूर द्वारा एक प्रश्न
लेखक ने एक मजदूर द्वारा उठाए गए प्रश्न को सबसे ज्यादा अंक दे डाले। वह गली में एक छेद (बिल) खोद रहा था। उसने लेखक को ऊदबिलाव के साथ देखा। उसने अपना औजार रख दिया। वह उसके समीप आया और उसे घूर कर देखा। फिर वह गुर्राया, “यहाँ मिस्टर-यह क्या हो सकता है ?”
