There was a girl named Valliammai. She was called Valli for short. She was eight years old. She wanted to know many things. She would stand in the front door way of her house. She would see what was happening outside. She had no playmates.
Valli’s wish to ride the bus
Watching the things gave Valli many unusual experiences. There ran a bus between her village and the nearest town. Valli got great joy in seeing new sets of passengers. So day after day she watched the bus. She soon developed a wish to ride on that bus.

Valli’s thought about the ride
Valli’s wish to ride the bus became stronger and stronger. She thought that if a friend described her riding in the bus she would downplay her. She would speak English word “Proud! Proud !” though she did not know the meaning.
Valli’s knowledge about the ride
Valli listened to the talks of the persons who travelled in the bus. This way, she leamt about small details of the journey. She now knew that the town was six miles away. The fare was thirty paise one way. The time of the ride was forty-five minutes. She also knew how she would return. Thus she planned before starting the ride.
Valli in the bus
One fine spring day Valli rode in the bus in the afternoon. The conductor was jolly and fond of joking. He understood that Valli spoke with pride. He offered Valli a front seat calling others to make way for ‘madam’. There were only six or seven passengers in the bus. They were looking at Valli. They were laughing with the conductor. Valli felt it insulting.
Valli studies everything inside and outside
Valli studied everything in the bus. It had soft and comfortable seats. It had a beautiful clock above the wind screen. She looked outside. But she had to stand up on the seat because of the curtain. The bus was going along the bank of a canal. She saw palm trees, mountains and the blue sky. On the other side there were green fields.
What happens inside the bus
Suddenly an elderly person asked Valli not to stand up calling her ‘child’. Valli got angry. She replied proudly that she was not a ‘child’. She had paid full price (fare) like others. The conductor was humorous. He told the elderly person that Valli was a grown-up ‘madam’. Valli looked at the conductor angrily. She told him that she was not a ‘madam’. And he had not yet given her the ticket. The conductor gave her a ticket.
The conductor’s advice to Valli
The conductor told Valli to sit comfortably. She should not stand. But Valli said she wanted to. He told her that she would fall and hurt on sharp turns. He called Valli “child”. At this Valli said that she was not a “child”. She told that she was eight years old.
Valli and an elderly woman
At the next stand an elderly woman came and sat beside Valli. The woman asked Valli if she was alone. Valli looked at the woman. She had ugly earrings. She had betel nut in her mouth. Betel juice was likely to come out of her mouth. At this Valli replied that she was alone and had got a ticket. The conductor added the same thing. Valli asked him why he didn’t mind his own business. She then laughed with the conductor.
How Valli snubs the woman
The woman told Valli that it was not proper for her to travel alone. She asked Valli about her house. Valli replied that she needn’t bother about her. She turned her face towards the window.

How Valli had planned for the ride
Valli had saved sixty paise for the bus journey with sacrifices. She had resisted the desire to buy toys, balloons etc. She had also killed her desire to ride in a merry-go-round. She had planned her first journey for long. She had stood at the front of her house to plan about it.
Movement of the bus
The bus now rode across a bare landscape. Trees came running towards them. They rushed when the bus moved. Sometime the bus seemed to strike the oncoming vehicle. But both passed by safely.
A cow before the bus
Suddenly a cow with raised tail came in front of the bus. The bus slowed to a crawl. The driver sounded the horn again and again. But the cow continued running before the bus. Valli clapped her hands with joy. She laughed and laughed. The conductor told her to save some laughter for the next day.
Bus reaches the city
The bus passed by the side of a railway crossing. Then it came to a thoroughfare. There were big and bright shops. There were huge crowds of people. Valli gaped at everything. At last the bus reached the town. The conductor asked Valli to get down. But she told that she was going back on the same bus. She gave the coins for the ticket to the conductor.
Talk between the conductor and Valli
The conductor asked Valli what the matter was. Valli told him that it was nothing. She felt like having a bus ride. The conductor asked if she won’t have a look at the sights. Valli replied that she was afraid of that. He asked her if she wasn’t afraid to come in the bus.
Conversation continues
The conductor asked Valli to have a cold drink. Valli told that she had not enough money. She asked for the ticket. The conductor offered her the drink from his own side. But Valli refused to accept the offer. The conductor asked Valli if her mother won’t look for her. Valli replied thjit no one would. They waited for the return journey.

Dead cow on the way
The bus started again. There were the same wonderful sights. Valli was not bored. But suddenly she saw a young cow lying dead by the roadside. It had been struck by some fast- moving vehicle.
Valli’s reaction
Valli asked the conductor if that dead cow wasn’t the same they had seen earlier. The conductor nodded. Valli got sad. The cow had looked earlier lovable and beautiful. But now it looked horrible in its death.
End of the journey
The bus moved. The memory of the dead cow haunted Valli. She no longer wanted to see outside. She sat glued to the seat as a sad person. The bus reached the village. Valli told the conductor to see again. The conductor smiled. He told Valli to come and join them whenever she felt like riding the bus. She must bring the fare with her. Valli laughed and alighted. But the death of the cow had changed Valli.
Valli reaches home
Valli reached home. She found her aunt living in the South Street talking with her mother.’She was a real chatterbox. She asked Valli where she had gone. Valli didn’t reply. She just smiled. Valli heard her mother saying that no one can know about everything. So many things happen. Valli replied in positive.
Valli’s reaction to her mother’s and aunt’s conversation
Valli’s aunt reacted. She called Valli a chit of a girl. She took interest in things that didn’t concern her. She behaved as if she were a grown lady. Valli smiled to herself. She didn’t want them to understand her smile. There was not much chance of that either.

वलियामाई नाम की एक लड़की थी। छोटे रूप में उसे वली कहा जाता था। वह आठ वर्ष की थी। वह बहुत-सी चीजों के बारे में जानना चाहती थी। वह घर के बाहर खड़ी होती। वह देखती कि बाहर क्या हो रहा है। उसके खेलने वाले साथी नहीं थे।

चीजों को देखने से वली को काफी असाधारण तजुरबे देखने को मिले। उसके गाँव और समीप के कस्बे के बीच में एक बस चलती थी। वली को नए यात्रियों को देखने में काफी अधिक खुशी प्राप्त होती थी। इसलिए दिन प्रति दिन वह बस को देखा करती थी। शीघ्र ही उसने उस बस में सवारी करने की इच्छा विकसित कर ली।
बस की सवारी के बारे में वली का विचार
वली की बस में सवारी की इच्छा तेज और तेज हो गई। उसने सोचा कि यदि एक मित्र बस की सवारी के बारे में बताए तो वह उसको अधिक महत्त्व नहीं देती थी। वह अंग्रेजी का शब्द ‘Proud ! Proud !’ कहती यद्यपि उसे उसका अर्थ मालूम नहीं था।
सवारी के बारे में वली का ज्ञान
वली उन व्यक्तियों की बातें सुनती थी जो बस की सवारी करते। इस प्रकार उसने यात्रा के बारे में छोटी-छोटी बातें भी जानीं। वह अब जानती थी कि कस्बा छह मील दूर था। एक तरफ का किराया तीस पैसे था। सवारी का समय पैंतालीस मिनट था। वह यह भी जानती थी कि वह कैसे वापस आएगी। इस प्रकार उसने सवारी करने से पहले योजना बनाई।

वली बस में
बसन्त के एक सुन्दर दिन वली ने दोपहर पश्चात् बस की सवारी की। कन्डक्टर खुश मिजाज व्यक्ति था और मजाक करने का शौकीन था। वह समझ गया कि वली गर्व से बोलती थी। उसने यह दूसरों को कहकर कि ‘मैडम’ के लिए रास्ता बनाओ वली को सामने की सीट दे दी। बस में सिर्फ छह या सात यात्री थे। वे वली को देख रहे थे। वे कन्डक्टर के साथ हँस रहे थे। वली ने उसे अपमानजनक महसूस किया।
वली द्वारा अन्दर और बाहर की हरेक वस्तु का अवलोकन
वली ने बस में हरेक चीज का अवलोकन किया। इसमें सीटें नर्म और आरामदायक थीं। सामने वाले शीशे के ऊपर एक सुन्दर घड़ी लगी हुई थी। उसने बाहर देखा। परन्तु परदे के कारण उसे सीट के ऊपर खड़ा होना पड़ा। बस एक नदी (नहर) के किनारे-किनारे जा रही थी। उसने ताड़ के वृक्ष, पहाड़ और नीला आकाश देखा। दूसरी तरफ हरे खेत थे।
बस के अन्दर क्या होता है।
अचानक एक बुजुर्ग व्यक्ति ने वली को ‘बच्ची’ कहकर खड़ा न होने के लिए कहा। वली को गुस्सा आ गया। उसने गर्व से उत्तर दिया कि वह ‘बच्ची’ नहीं थी। उसने दूसरों की तरह पूरा किराया दिया था। कन्डक्टर मजाकिया था। उसने उस बुजुर्ग व्यक्ति को बताया कि वली एक पूर्ण विकसित ‘मैडम’ थी। वली ने कन्डक्टर की तरफ गुस्से से देखा। उसने उसे बताया कि वह ‘मैडम’ नहीं थी और उसने तब तक उसे टिकट भी नहीं दिया था। कन्डक्टर ने उसे एक टिकट दे दिया।
वली को कन्डक्टर की सलाह
कन्डक्टर ने वली को आराम से बैठने के लिए कहा। उसे खड़ा नहीं होना चाहिए। परन्तु वली ने कहा कि वह (खड़ा होना) चाहती थी। उसने उसे बताया कि वह गिर जाएगी और उसे तीखे मोड़ों पर चोट लग जाएगी। उसने वली को ‘बच्ची’ कहा। इस पर वली ने कहा कि वह ‘बच्ची’ नहीं थी। उसने बताया कि वह आठ वर्ष की थी।
वली और एक बुजुर्ग महिला
अगले स्टैण्ड पर एक बुजुर्ग महिला आई और वली के बराबर में बैठ गई। महिला ने पूछा कि क्या वली अकेली थी। वली ने महिला की तरफ देखा। उसने भद्दी कान की बालियाँ पहन रखी थीं। उसके मुँह में सुपारी थी। सुपारी का रस उसके मुँह से बाहर आने को था। इस पर वली ने उत्तर दिया कि वह अकेली थी और उसके पास एक टिकट था। कन्डक्टर ने भी यही कहा। वली ने उसे कहा कि वह अपना काम क्यों नहीं कर रहा था। फिर वह कन्डक्टर के साथ हँसी।
वली महिला को कैसे डांटती है।
महिला ने वली को बताया कि उस के लिए अकेले सवारी करना ठीक नहीं है। उसने वली को उसके घर के बारे में पूछा। वली ने उत्तर दिया कि उसे उसके बारे में दुखी होने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। उसने अपना मुँह खिड़की की तरफ मोड़ लिया।

वली ने सवारी की कैसे योजना बनाई थी
वली ने कुर्बानियों के साथ बस की यात्रा के लिए साठ पैसे बचाए थे। उसने खिलौने व गुब्बारे आदि खरीदने की इच्छा का विरोध किया था। उसने एक झूले में झूलने की अपनी इच्छा को भी मारा था। उसने अपनी पहली यात्रा की योजना को काफी समय पहले से बनाया था। इसके बारे में योजना बनाने के लिए वह अपने घर के सामने खड़ी रही थी।
बस की चाल
अब बस एक रूखे-सूखे भूदृश्य के बीचों-बीच गुजरी। वृक्ष उनकी तरफ दौड़ते आए। वे दौड़ते थे जब बस चलती थी। कभी कभी बस आने वाली गाड़ी के साथ टकराती दिखाई देती थी। परन्तु दोनों सुरक्षापूर्ण गुजर जाती थी।
बस के सामने एक गाय
अचानके ऊपर उठी पूँछ के साथ एक गाय बस के सामने आई। बस रेंगने के स्तर तक धीमी हो गई। ड्राईवर ने बार-बार हॉर्न बजाया। परन्तु गाय ने बस के सामने दौड़ना जारी रखा। वली ने खुशी से तालियाँ बजाईं। वह हँसती रही। कन्डक्टर ने उसे अगले दिन के लिए कुछ हँसी बचाने के लिए कहा।
बस का शहर में पहुँचना।
बस एक रेलवे फाटक के बराबर से गुजरी। फिर यह एक आम रास्ते पर आ गई। वहाँ पर बड़ी और चमकीली दुकानें थीं। वहाँ पर व्यक्तियों की काफी भीड़ थी। वली ने हरेक वस्तु को मुँह खोलकर देखा। अन्त में बस कस्बे में पहुँच गई। कन्डक्टर ने वली को उतरने के लिए कहा। परन्तु उसने कहा कि वह उसी बस में वापस जा रही थी। उसने कन्डक्टर को टिकट के लिए सिक्के दे दिए।
कन्डक्टर और वली में बातचीत
कन्डक्टर ने वली से पूछा कि क्या बात है। वली ने उसे बताया कि कुछ नहीं है। उसकी इच्छा बस की सवारी की हुई। कन्डक्टर ने उससे पूछा कि क्या वह दृश्यों को नहीं देखेगी। वली ने उत्तर दिया कि वह उससे डरती थी। उसने उससे पूछा कि वह बस में आने के लिए डरती नहीं थी।
बातचीत जारी रहती है।
कन्डक्टर ने वली को एक शीतल पेय लेने के लिए पूछा। वली ने बताया कि उसके पास काफी पैसे नहीं हैं। उसने टिकट के लिए पूछा। कन्डक्टर ने अपनी तरफ से उसे पेय की पेशकश की। परन्तु वली ने पेशकश स्वीकार करने से मना कर दिया। कन्डक्टर ने वली से पूछा कि क्या उसकी माँ उसे नहीं ढूंढेगी। वली ने उत्तर दिया कि उसे कोई नहीं ढूंढेगा। उन्होंने वापसी यात्रा के लिए प्रतीक्षा की।

रास्ते में मरी हुई गाय
बस फिर चल पड़ी। फिर वही आश्चर्यजनक नजारे थे। वली उकताई नहीं। परन्तु शीघ्र ही उसने सड़क के किनारे एक मरी पड़ी युवा गाय को देखा। उसको किसी तेज चलने वाली गाड़ी ने टक्कर मार दी थी।
वली की प्रतिक्रिया
वली ने कन्डक्टर से पूछा कि क्या मरी हुई गाय वही गाय नहीं थी जिसे उन्होंने पहले देखा था। कन्डक्टर ने सिर हिलाया। वली उदास हो गई। गाय पहले प्यारी और सुन्दर दिखती थी। परन्तु अब यह इसकी मृत्यु में भयानक दिख रही थी।
यात्रा का अन्त
बस चल पड़ी। मरी हुई गाय की याद वली को सताती रही। अब वह और बाहर देखना नहीं चाहती थी। वह एक उदास व्यक्ति के रूप में सीट से चिपक कर बैठी रही। बम गाँव पहुँच गई। वली ने कन्डक्टर को फिर मिलने के लिए कहा। कन्डक्टर मुस्कराया। उसने वली को उसका मन बस में सवारी करने के लिए जब कभी बने आने के लिए कहा। उसे अपने साथ किराया लाना होगा। वली हँसी और उतर गई। परन्तु गाय की मृत्यु ने वली को बदल दिया था।
वली का घर पहुँचना
वली घर पहुँच गई। उसने साउथ स्ट्रीट में रहने वाली अपनी चाची को अपनी माँ के साथ बात करते हुए पाया। वह वास्तविक रूप में बातूनी थी। उसने वली से पूछा कि वह कहाँ गई थी। वली ने उत्तर नहीं दिया। वह सिर्फ मुस्कराई। वली ने अपनी माँ को यह कहते हुए सुना कि कोई भी हरेक वस्तु के बारे में जान नहीं सकता। काफी चीजें घटित होती हैं। वली ने सकारात्मक उत्तर दिया।
अपनी माँ और चाची की बातचीत के प्रति वली की प्रतिक्रिया
वली की चाची ने प्रतिक्रिया की। उसने वली को एक नादान लड़की कहा। वह उन वस्तुओं में आनन्द लेती थी जिनसे उसका कोई मतलब नहीं था। वह ऐसे व्यवहार करती थी जैसे कि वह एक पूर्ण महिला हो। वली स्वयं के लिए मुस्कराई। वह नहीं चाहती थी कि वे उसकी मुस्कान को समझें। उसका कोई अधिक अवसर भी नहीं था।
