                                                         SECTION A – Reading

1. Read the following passage carefully.
1    Blending freestytle dancing with a workout routine is now becoming a popular form of exercising. There are also a variety of dance varieties that have been used as workouts in the past. The most popular forms have been the zumba, belly dancing and salsa but the latest variety to have caught the headlines is bokwa dancing. It is touted as a major global fitness trend this year.
2    Unlike other forms of dancing used by fitness enthusiasts, bokwa dancing enjoys the privilege of being devised by a fitness expert and not a dance enthusiast Paul Mavi, the fitness personality Trom South Africa, who created this aerobic activity, derives the name from ‘Bo’ meaning boxing and ‘kwaito’ an African word for a style of South African music and dance.
3    The workout is quite easy, even though the name may be hard to pronounce. Not to be confused with the other African favourite the zumba, bokwa does not follow any choreography. The zumba on the other hand, is created around a traditional 8-beat count and is slower in tempo. In fact, the bokwa is often touted as an alternative to zumba.
4    While dancing the bokwa, all one must keep in mind is to draw the English language letters and numbers with one’s feet, along with performing an energizing cardio workout routine. Interestingly, this dance routine can be followed by people of all ages. For a fast workout one can go all out and jazz it up with extra shimmies, hip bumps, or other freestyle moves.
5    The lean and mean dance routine is a great cardio workout as it combines cardio conditioning, strength training coordination and flexibility. One bokwa exercise session can help one burn around 1000 calories. Moreover it is said to be the only fitness programme that uses hand signs. According to its founder Mavi, the use of sign language makes it simple for people to follow the routines.
Q. On the basis of your reading of the above passage answer the following questions.
(a)    What are the dance routines used as fitness models?
(b)    What is unique about bokwa dancing as a fitness module?
(c)    What is the origin of the term ‘bokwa’?
(d)    What is known about the inventor of this dance form?
(e)    Mention two differences between bokwa and zumba dancing.
(f)    How is bokwa dancing performed?
(g)    What measures can be taken for a fast workout?
(h)    What added advantage does bokwa dancing over all other forms?

2.  Read the following passage carefully.
1    The quality of fruits and vegetables that feed most of Delhi’s population is being affected by the river’s pollution. It is not pesticides, but a toxic mix of industrial effluents that are contaminating the fruits and vegetables that are being grown on the river’s bed. This is risking the lives of those people specially, who eat greens grown on this soil. The National Green Tribunal has been asking for a ban on artificial colours applied to fruits and vegetables and on the waxing of certain fruits such as apples.
2    That the government is conscious of this grave danger looming large over the city’s population is evident from the fact that they recently issued an advertisement asking consumers to clean their vegetables in various solutions, to do away with the chemical residue. They have advised consumers to discard the outer layers of leafy vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage. In the case of melons, carrots and turnips/consumers are advised to rub the surface first with a dry brush or towel and then rinse it. Others advise that vegetables be kept in boiling water before being rinsed and an even more ingenuous solution to the problem is to soak the vegetablesJn diluted vinegar before rinsing them. Another advice given is to dip the vegetables in ozonated water to help reduce pesticide residues. A more sober approach given by some is to ear a variety of fruits and vegetables to avoid excessive consumption f the same kind of pesticides.
3 The Energy and Resources Institute in its study has found that the level of toxic metals like nickel, lead, manganese chromium, and zinc are high in many water samples. Sometimes it is as high a ten times the accepted limits and water in the vicinity of thermal plants the mercury concentration is as high as 200 times more than the required level. Even polished foodgrains are not free of this menace for these items, contaminated with hazardous substances are being sold in wholesale and retail markets. Farmers growing vegetables and fruits for a livelihood have thus no choice but to use the polluted water as the pollution and industrial agencies have failed in their task of controlling the flow of effluents into the river.

The thud of a newspaper falling on the doorstep is a sound that symbolizes a look at the world beyond our own homes. For students, a newspaper is an invaluable means of increasing general knowledge. The latest unfolding of developing stories can only be gathered from newspaper reading. Also, the finer details of a sensational happening can be garnered from its pages. The sports page also makes us relive the exciting moments on the play field and provides a ball-by-ball commentary of the event. Also, comments of coaches and players, are interesting highlights of such occasions. We are not only well informed and confident but also able to bond with family elders for whom the newspaper is a habit that they cherish lifelong.

Ans.                                                                   A Baker’s Bonanza
The town had received a month’s supply of rainfall in one week and had witnessed the worst floods in living history. The waters had claimed the lives of 50 people and destroyed livestock and property worth lakhs. The local cheese factories had downed their shutters and driven their goats to safety in the mountains. Only Hans, the baker was still working, but his bread factory was threatened with flooding, and protecting it became crucial for the food supplies to continue to the flood victims. Hans wrung his hands in despair and wiped off the tears that gushed out. He was devastated at the thought of losing his means of livelihood. The volunteer group from local educational institutions proved their worth. The students comforted him by giving him hot chocolate to drink, sat him down and offered to help him. They dug up sand from the river bank, and sand bagged the premises, all around, working day and night. The factory remained dry and baking continued non-stop to feed the stricken victims who had taken shelter in hospitals, schools and on their rooftops. When the floods receded, the baker baked a huge chocolate cake for the volunteers as a gesture of goodwill and thanksgiving.
Or
Fate had ruled otherwise. Dr Carroll enjoyed the company of the little girls next door. He had also written a special story for the little girls which he wanted to read to them at the birthday party. It was about Hooly Hoo a baby bear who loved to be invited to birthday parties. Dr Caroll had even ordered a special fancy dress costume which he was to wear to the party. It consisted of white synthetic fur and when he tried it on, he looked like a furry ball of white wool walking about on all fours.
At precisely four o’clock Dr Caroll, in fancy dress, rang the neighbour’s door bell. He went down on all fours and began growling and crawling forward. He was surprised to see no children around. All he saw was a group of ladies having a kitty party.
The perplexed ladies stood amazed. The hostess came forward and explained. She told him that he had mixed up the dates and arrived a day too early for the great occasion. He wanted to leave the room as soon as possible but the ladies pressed him to stay on and entertain them with his little bear act.

The citizens of Rome played a crucial role in the play Julius Caesar. The crowd of commoners that filled the streets served several dramatic purposes in the play, especially, during the funeral oration. Brutus logically gave his reasons that necessitated Caesar’s death. He informed the commoners that he acted out of love for Rome. The citizens believed his words and cheered for him. However, their mood altered when Antony offered his interpretation of the situation. He passionately described the deeds Caesar performed for the benefit of the people of Rome. Antony’s speech overwhelmed the people with grief, despair and anger for their beloved Caesar’s death. In the play citizens are important characters though they are emotionally hyped and fickleminded.
